Hello there!

I am a Ph.D. Candidate at the Computer Science Department, William & Mary, Co-advised by Dr. Adwait Nadkarni and Dr. Denys Poshyvanyk. I am currently researching on Security and Software as part of the SPL and SEMERU research groups. I used to teach at Institute of Information Technology, the pioneering software engineering Institute of Bangladesh, but I am on leave now. I have completed both my BSc. in IT (Major in Software Engineering) and MSc. in Software Engineering from the same Institute in year 2012 and 2014 respectively. I got married in the year 2017, with lovely Prianka Mandal, who is also a pursuing PhD at the William & Mary! I became a father to a beautiful, healthy daughter in 2023! We named her Agnika (Born from Fire) Prisha (God’s Gift).

I started my career by working as a software engineering intern at Southtech Limited (was CMMI level 3 software company then, now CMMI level 5). Later, I joined M&H Informatics Ltd. (An IQVIA company) as a software engineer after graduation. Within a very short time, I was assigned to various projects and was selected to lead the company team at Code Warriors’ Bangladesh - industry level competition. After a while, I was offered a position at Academia, and I switched to become a Lecturer at IIT, University of Dhaka. Career details and publications are available [here] and [here].

I have a keen interest in new technologies, experimental software engineering and practical possibilities of novel ideas. I sometimes look at pain points of day to day activities (mostly related to software engineering/computing); create simple, open source solutions as pet projects and share it with everyone through GitHub. My pet projects are referred/recognized in websites like OMG! Ubuntu! and by Microsoft MVPs sometimes. Some ideas end up becoming funded experimental software engineering [researches].

Amit Seal Ami in Different Activities

As student I participated, achieved accolades in, organized, and mentored different competitions and workshops, such as Microsoft Imagine Cup Bangladesh, Microsoft App-a-Thon, BASIS Code Warriors’ Bangladesh and BUET System Design and Development Contest. I was recognized as one of the 100 young people to represent Bangladesh as part of Bangladesh Youth Delegates to India program. After becoming a faculty member, I try to contribute by volunteering as judge and mentor at national level competitions(National Hackathon, EATL Apps Contest, Smart City Hackathon, Tech for Peace Initiative etc.), and take technical sessions on various topics at other universities. Due to my experiences in both academia and industry, I regularly collaborate with industry and academia at different levels, including helping develop national level policies.
